Breeding from your mare

Why do you want to breed from your mare? Be honest with yourself - Is your mare suitable? and what is intended purpose for the resulting foal? Is the mare likely to be able to produce what you want

If she is, it can be one of the most magical rewarding things you will ever experience.

Preparation

  • Your mare will almost definitely need to be swabbed and EVA tested. Allow 7 days for the test results.

  • Make a note of any seasons you see - the dates and the length

  • Have the hind shoes removed

  • Read any stud contracts carefully

Stallions At Stud

The right stallion is the one that compliments your mare and will produce the type of foal you are intending to produce. Before you visit studs work out where you could make improvements on your mare, be it conformation, temperament or movement.
Work out what other factors are important to you:
  • Does the stallion/stud adhere to the health regimes you want. For example are the stallions CEM, Klebsiella, psedemonas, EVA tested. Are they flu vaccinated. Do they require that of all visiting mares?
  • Do they offer the services your require....for example would you be looking for AI (partbreds only)
  • Do you feel confident your mare would be looked after and covered in safe surroundings with a stallion who is under control
We hope to have a fully searchable Stallion list shortly but so you dont miss this years breeding season please see the list below:
